Paloma Mocktail

Sometimes you want something special in your glass - not because it contains alcohol, but because the moment deserves it. This Paloma Mocktail is bright with grapefruit and lime juice, lightly sparkling, and thoughtfully balanced so it feels just as celebratory as any cocktail. It's the kind of drink you'd pour for a slow brunch, an Easter gathering, or Mother's Day morning. This Paloma Mocktail is refreshing, beautiful, and made so everyone at the table can raise a glass together.

I love a good Paloma cocktail, but sometimes I want that citrusy pink drink without the alcohol. This Paloma mocktail hits the spot. I've made these with club soda/sparkling water, but also with ginger ale. I personally prefer the club soda, as it cuts the sweetness down and adds lots of tiny bubbles 😊.

Ingredients in a Paloma Mocktail

  • Grapefruit Juice
  • Lime Juice
  • Simple Syrup or Agave Nectar
  • Club Soda/Sparkling Water, or Ginger ale
A picture of the all the ingredients needed to make non-alcohlic palomas. Grapefruit juice, club soda or ginger ale, fresh limes, and a sweetener like simple syrup.

Grapefruit Juice - freshly squeezed gives the best flavor, but a good store bought juice will work well too. Pink Grapefruit gives the nice pink color and is sweeter than regular grapefruit.

Lime Juice - freshly squeezed is a must here. I have never found a store bought lime juice that comes anywhere close in taste to freshly squeezed.

Simple Syrup or Agave Nectar - Adds sweetness which is nice if you are adding carbonation via club soda or sparkling water. If you are using ginger ale, you can skip on the sweetener.

Club Soda/Sparkling Water, or Ginger ale - Tops off the drink with a fizzy finish. Kids might prefer ginger ale as it makes for a sweeter drink.

How To Make a Paloma Mocktail

Prepare the Rim

The original Paloma Cocktail is made with tequila and like many tequila drinks, a salt rim is a great accompaniment. In this mocktail version you can do a salt rim which still works with the citrus flavor, or you could do a coarse sugar rim if you are serving someone who doesn't like the salty taste.

Pour about 2 tablespoon of coarse salt/sugar (or a mixture of the two) onto a small plate.

Prepare the cocktail glass by rubbing the rim with a wedge of a lime or grapefruit (this moistens the rim to allow the salt to stick).

Place the moistened rim into the salt/sugar giving the glass a little twist to help the salt adhere to the moist rim. Then lift out and set aside.

Preparing the Mocktail Without a Shaker

Top right is lime juice being added to grapefruit juice in the glass. Bottom left is a picture of the juices being stirred together. Bottom right is the drink being topped up with fizzy club soda.

Add the grapefruit juice, lime juice and simple syrup (if using) to the prepared cocktail glass.  Give it a gentle stir being careful to not disturb the salt/sugar rim.

Gently add in some ice cubes and top with the club soda or ginger ale.

Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and sprig of mint. Serve and enjoy.

Preparing the Mocktail With a Cocktail Shaker

Add the grapefruit juice, lime juice and simple syrup (if using) to the cocktail shaker. Add a handful of ice cubes, seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10 seconds.  Strain into the prepared glass filled with ice.

Top up with the club soda or ginger ale.

Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a sprig of mint. Serve and enjoy.

What to Serve with Paloma Mocktails

A refreshing Paloma mocktail is the perfect drink for almost any occasion. Serve it at brunch alongside savory or sweet favorites like quiche, eggs Benedict, deviled eggs, crepes, pancakes, strawberry scones, or a fresh peach burrata salad. It's also at home at a backyard BBQ, paired with grilled meats like Portuguese chicken or garlic parmesan chicken skewers and bang bang chicken skewers. Or maybe you're simply kicking back, watching the sunset with a bag of chips and good friends. However you serve it, this non-alcoholic Paloma fits right in.

Pro Tips and Substitutions

  1. You can also rim the glass with Tajin instead of coarse salt if you want to try something different. Even a mixture of Tajin and coarse sugar would be good.
  2. The fizziness in the drink is from the club soda or sparkling water.  This can be replaced with grapefruit soda for a more grapefruit forward sweeter drink or even  ginger ale.
  3. If you don't have mint sprigs you could also use sprigs of thyme or rosemary, even basil would go well.
